The point of a Protective Styles is to Protect Right?!!
The aim is to retain hair growth whilst being given the opportunity to change up your look and try something totally new. So how come there are still so many protective styles damaging our hair in more ways than one. The key problem I must address is the Thinning of edges. This is seriously a no joking matter and seems to be attacking the female species in full effect!
For most of us this is simply a history lesson. What I mean by that is, for some, having a hairline has literally become a thing of the past that Sir David Attenborough simply forget to enlighten us on. But to add some more tea to the situation, some of you are in acceptance of these hide and go hairstyles. Ladies this isn't cool. I'm not sure how well you think your hiding the truth under there, but I can assure you for some it just isn't working. But more to the point it's simply something you should just not tolerate. Weave's, wig's and braid style's not only boost our confidence from just knowing we are not attacking our hair on a daily basis, but we must address the point that it can ultimately add to our insecurities in rocking our natural hair, if after we are left with less.
Emotionally you can become very aware of the problems going on under your protective style, so why do we continue to ignore the problem in hope it will all work out in the end! You are fully aware these problems will not work in your best interest, but as long as you have that premium hair covering up that hairline that you saw thinning over the past mouth, you continue to seek bliss in your ignorance and kiss your teeth and continue with your day.
Take a minute and say to yourself what's going on under my hair. Protective style's can be quick and stress free, but frankly the style you are solely realigning on can quite possibly just be adding to the problem. You ever notice that women constantly patting their hair!

Now readers, I'm always coming from a place of experience and yes my hair has felt like a flea pit once or twice in my lifetime, especially when I've been so cheap and resorted to digging in that basket in the front of the hair shop that is literally cheaper than a packet of cigarette's. Don't act like you don't know that basket I'm talking about. I mean, you do the math, hair plus hairdresser can sometimes put you in a situation of, do I pay that bill or slay with a new hairstyle! Yep, that then accounts to the itchy scalp and 30mph hair patting. But if we had a little better knowledge of how to take care of our scalp and it wasn’t simply down for smothering, the first thing on are dressing table that reads oil we might have a chance in actually finding better ways to wear our protective styles with a healthy scalp to go. So here are the old fashioned tips that we have ignored over and over again, Oh you thought I had some new magic formula of instruction to share with you, HELL No this is just a remix ladies.
Protective style must not be so tight you evolve into the Asian women passing you your special fried rice or have you kicking ass like Lucy Lu from the pain you're in.
Oils. Abstain from anything you use in a frying pan, oils you pour into candles to make them smell nice and Butter has never been a replacement for coconut oil! Moisture is simply key. Dry brittle hair is prone to breakage, but with the right oils will become more flexible and is much harder to break. Misting this is a way to keep your edges moist by simply using a mix of water and a light oil to seal and avoid build up. You choose the oil but always go with quality over quantity.
Avoid setting gels and drying alcohol sprays. Ironically these edge controlled gels are not advised for thinning edges as they make the hair dry and brittle in order to stay in place. Even though they are not damaging, they can destroy damaged edges further as alcohol is very drying. So look out for alcohol's such as Ethanol, Propanol, SD alcohol and Isopropyl to name a few.
Pillow cases are seriously a big deal, its simple and one of the most talked about secrets to great edges. Satin and silk are super absorbing, whilst cotton and fabric do the complete opposite and dry out your hair.
