Issa Rae, Janelle Monet and Yara Shahidi. What do these three ladies have in common? Well all three were named as 2017 Power of Presence honourees at the 10th Annual Essence Black Woman in Hollywood Awards.
Something else they have in the common is that they have all been giving us life this red carpet season! Here are a few of our favourite red carpet hairdos from these three stunners.
Janelle Monae at the Golden Globes
Janelle Monae has just been blowing us away this red carpet season with fantastic hair and even more amazing dresses, and just when we thought she was cooked and couldn’t get any better… POW! She walked into the Oscars in a stunning Elie Saab Haute Couture dress and wait for it... a pixie cut!
That's right, she has traded in the signature up do that we have come to associate with her so fondly, for an uber glam, wavy pixie cut. We know she loves a good hair accessories and her Oscar look was no exception. Adorning her new cut was a gold wreath fit for a Grecian Goddess. As if we didn't already know she was queen!
Yara Shahidi at the NAACP Image Awards
Known for her starring role as Zoey in the ABC series, Black-ish, 15 year old Yara Shahidi has quickly become a style icon for the younger generation. She regularly switches up hair in her role as the social butterfly of awkward Black-ish family and on the red carpet she's no different.
We absolutely love her look for the NAACP Image Awards. With a twist on a French braided style, Yara effortlessly proved that protective styling can be just as glamorous (if not more) than loose curls. Ladies, not everyday bouncy 'fro; sometimes slay with a sleek pig tails!
Yara is also an ambassador for race equality and women's rights, so we already loved her but the fact that she also slays on level 100 makes her a perfect package. We wonder she's in the market for a new big sister.
Issa Rae at the Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards
Issa Rae is the woman that can do it all. She can write, direct, produce, act, YOU NAME IT! We're patiently waiting for her one woman show "Issa Rae", written and produced by Issa Rae, starring Issa Rae as Issa Rae.
Yep, Issa has come a long way from her "Awkward Black Girl" days, and so has her hair. Her TWA has graduated to the big leagues and with the growth of her hair has come the ability to experiment - an ability she has fully utilised.
If the past is anything to go by, Issa loves an updo and with a face like her's, why wouldn't she want to show it off. Needless to say we're sure there will be floods of YouTubers trying to recreate her style for the Black Women in Hollywood Awards. This super sleek bun and sweeping side bang combination was a winner. She needs an award for this look alone... Although we're not sure she'll have space in her trophy cabinet if she continues taking Hollywood by storm.
