Nothing makes a woman feel more beautiful than when her skin is glowing and having a good skin care routine is one of the key factors when its comes to maintaining healthy, radiant skin.
With so many different products out there to choose from it can feel a bit overwhelming when it comes to picking out what you should be using on your skin. I want to share some insider tips on how to get your perfect skin care routine.
Before you start picking out products it’s so important to know your skin type so that you can be sure what you are using is suited to your skin.
There are 4 skin types: oily, dry, combination and normal, if your not sure which skin type you fall under, don't worry it’s easy for you to analyse your own skin and find out.
All you need to do is cleanse your face and then leave it for 10- 20 minuets without putting any products on and you true skin type show…. match your skin to the types below.
Oily- you will find your skin starts to become oily in certain areas
Dry- your skin will feel tight and dry
Combination- your skin will be oily in some areas and dry in others
normal- your skin will not be oily or dry.
So now that you know what skin type your working with it’s time talk about the routine…. to really give your skin the best treatment you need to have a morning and night time ritual that you do everyday. I'm going to break the steps down for you here, so you know exactly what you need to be doing and why your skin will thank you for it.
1- CLEANSE: cleansing is something that everyone should be doing whether you wear make up or not. By cleaning the skin you are removing the sweat, dirt and free radicals that builds up throughout the day and contribute to break outs and ageing, If you do wear make up you should think about doing a double cleanse to ensure your skin is completely clean.
For dry skin oil cleaners are great as they give skin the extra moisture that it’s lacking, where as for oily, combination and normal skin types I would recommend using a milk cleanser as it gently cleans the skin without stripping it of its natural oils.
All my readers with oily skin, I know you are probably thinking ‘why would I want to use a milk??? I will stick to my cleansing foam thank you!’ Unknown by many, a foam that strips all the natural oils off your skin is actually the worst thing to use, as your skin will react by producing more oil to replace what was lost, leaving you feeling even more oily. The aim here is to balance; if your skin feels like oil is already there, it not need produce so much, and over time your skins oil production will regulate resulting in less oily skin.
2- TONE: After you have cleansed the next step is to tone your skin. Toning has so many amazing benefits; it gets deep down into the pours to get rid of any dirt that you missed with the cleaner, it also brings the skin back to it’s optimum pH and refines your pores. An effective method for applying toner is to put a ten pence piece amount of toner on to two damp cotton pads and evenly distributing it over your face avoiding the eye area, then use the pads of your fingers to gently press in any toner that is still on the surface of the skin. For all skin types I would recommend using a hydrating toner that is gentle on the skin, flower waters make brilliant toners.
3- SERUM: There is a lot of confusion when it comes to serums, some people use them as moisturisers, and some people don't see the point and avoid them all together. Although using a serum is not the most crucial part of a skin care routine, it’s something you should consider doing if you want to see faster results for your skin. Serums are water-based products designed to sink down into the lower levels of your skin to treat the layers a moisturiser can't reach. As serums are water based there is not point in using a serum by it’s self as is would simply evaporate out of your skin, using a serum then moisturiser locks the serum into the skin and has a duel action effect, treating lower and surface layers of the skin together which result in quicker visible results.
It’s always best to get the matching serum and moisturiser as they are formulated to work together to give you the best results.
4- MOISTURISE: when picking a moisturiser you should look back to the results of your skin type test and choose a moisturiser that is designed for your skin type. If your skin type is oily you want something with a lightweight gel consistency that will keep you skin hydrated without feeling greasy. For dry skin a richer cream is what you need to really nourish and smooth your skin, Shea butter has proven most effective out of all the butters when it comes to nourishing the skin and work particularly well for those with dry and even eczema prone skin. Normal and combination skin types suite a light cream that will keep the skin nourished and hydrated without being to overpowering. Having a different night time moisturiser is optional, night creams are slightly richer than day creams, because when we sleep is the time that our skin repairs and heals itself so we need some extra goodness to help our skin rejuvenate.
5- PROTECT: This last step is one of the most important ones, protecting your skin from the sun is essential even here in the UK where we don't get to feel the sun that often, SPF should still be used all year round. The reason for this being is that exposure to the uv raise contributes to skin damage, ageing and worsens any pigmentation problems. New clinical trials have shown that moisturisers and foundations that contain an SPF only protect your skin for up to three hours, so it best to get an SPF shield that you can put on over the top of you daily moisturiser and reapply throughout the day.

3 SKIN CARE HACKS
Drinking water- by drinking lots of water you will flush all the toxins out of your skin which will clear up break outs and leave you skin looking clear, plump and glowing. Tea Tree Oil- Putting a drop of Tee Tree essential oil on to spots before bed will reduce the size and reddens of spots by the time you wake up in the morning. Never use face wipes- Avoid using face wipes at all costs as they contain harsh chemicals such as rust remover which will leave your skin irritated and stripped of all natural oils.
