Beauty products are constantly being thrown at us to buy everywhere we go. Who doesn't love picking out a new foundation or that must have lipstick? How many of you attempted to achieve the infamous and flawless "no makeup" makeup look, just to realise your pores are clogged, you have dull skin and you keep getting those pesky blemishes at the worst time possible? Not to burst your bubble...BUT with all the beauty products in the world, your skin can't perform at its best without the proper products and regimen.
People tend to think that all expensive items are worth it and are good for you. Well, I'm here to tell you don't be fooled by that fancy package or price tag. The proof is in the ingredients and determining what your skin needs. Don't worry I have you covered. Now let me share the inside scoop on which products you should splurge and save your hard-earned money on!
Cleansers should be simple yet effective. This is one area you shouldn't over complicate. It's extremely important to know your skin type in order to select the best cleanser for you. Lisa Eldrige, Celebrity Makeup Artist and Creative Director of Lancome, made a great point in one of her skin care YouTube videos. Lisa explained that you shouldn't spend a lot of money on cleansers unless they have other benefits and properties besides cleansing. Cleansers are only on your skin for a few minutes and then rinsed away, so Lisa's advice made perfect sense. After testing several different cleansers from various price points, I noticed that the price of a product does not indicate how well it will perform. Keep it simple! Cleansers are meant to do one thing...CLEANSE!

Exfoliators can be used anywhere from once a week to four times a week to rid your pores of dirt and excess oils. The frequency of exfoliators is determined by your skin type and the strength of the exfoliator you choose. There are so many options for exfoliators from DIY (coffee grinds to sugar and salt scrubs) to over the counter. No matter your preference, this is another area that should be simple yet effective for your skin and your regimen. Remember most exfoliators aren't recommended for daily use!

3. Eye Creams
Eye Creams are often disregarded, especially by teenagers and women in their 20's. I was guilty of this myself; however, after careful research and watching countless YouTube skincare routine videos, I realised this is a step I cannot skip any longer. If you are a woman of colour, I'm sure you've heard the saying "Black don't crack!" Well, guess what? No matter your ethnicity, you shouldn't skip out on eye cream. Now I know what you might be saying right now, "aren't eye creams a more expensive moisturiser?" No, they aren't. Several dermatologists have noted that eye creams are specifically formulated for the fragile skin around our eyes. The ingredients in eye creams are more active than your facial moisturiser and can fight off signs of fatigue, fine lines, and wrinkles just from daily movements of your eye. So with that being said, you don't have to be considered an older lady to start using eye cream. Protect the skin around your eyes ASAP!

Just like cleansers, moisturisers are vital to any skin care regimen. Depending on your skin type and concerns, you can choose a simple hydration cream or a deep treatment facial cream. This type of product can be a one-stop shop for some while others prefer multiple creams for different needs or time of day. At the moment I like to have one cream for the day and one for the night, (both provide excellent hydration and different benefits for the day). Moisturisers penetrate into the layers of our skin providing several benefits from hydration, primer, protection against free radicals, to anti-aging properties. The list goes on and on! Don't forget to read the ingredients list to make sure you're selecting the proper cream for your skin.
Spot treatments should be in your skin care arsenal just in case an unwanted guest decides to pop up out of nowhere. This product shouldn't be complicated and has only one purpose...get rid of blemishes STAT!

Sunblock is often overlooked at as a skin care product that should be a part of your regimen. Don't worry; I was guilty of this myself for many years. Most people don't know that sunblock is vital for anti-aging and the overall health of your skin. Sunblock in the past was known for causing breakouts or leaving a white cast on darker skin. Nowadays we have several options to choose from that don't disappoint. No matter your skin type or tone, make sure you apply sunblock daily.
