"Beauty on a budget". Has a nice ring to it doesn't it? It sounds even better when you consider the colossal price tags of some beauty products nowadays. It is reported that the UK beauty industry is worth a staggering £17 billion (yes, billion!) and that the average woman will spend approximately £140,000 on hair and cosmetics products in her lifetime. Crazy right!
Whilst we all have those particular products we don't mind shelling out a pretty penny for, when it comes to beauty products/treatments there might actually be far cheaper alternatives a little closer to home. That's right, I'm talking "homemade beauty on a budget". So ladies, look no further than your kitchen, yes your kitchen! It'll most likely have all you need for your own homemade beauty basics. Here are my faves for homemade beauty products/treatments that will not only leave you feeling great, but your bank balance will thank you for!
1) A face mask for oily skin or skin prone to dark marks/uneven skin tone.
What you'll need:
- 1 whole mashed banana
- 2 tbsp of honey
- Juice of half a lemon
Mash the banana until it is lumps and bumps free. Add in the honey, then the lemon juice and mix together until the ingredients form a smooth paste. Ensuring the skin is already clean, apply to the face concentrating mainly on the oil prone areas (forehead, nose, chin etc.). Leave on the skin for 20 minutes and rinse with cool water. Repeat this twice a week for clearer, radiant and less oily skin.
2) A face scrub to improve the skin’s elasticity, keeping it looking youthful.
What you'll need:
- 2 washed, whole tomatoes
- 3 tbsp of olive oil
- 2 tbsp of sea salt
You can use the skin of the tomato but I prefer to use the middle, fleshy bit only. Scoop the inside of the tomatoes out and place in a small mixing bowl. Add in the olive oil and sea salt and mix together. Apply the mixture to the face, gently rubbing against the skin like you would with any other face scrub. Be careful not to rub too hard as this may irritate the skin. Do this for about 5 minutes and wash off using warm water.
Whilst no product can stop ageing in it's tracks, this natural remedy will certain help slow it down, without the hefty price tag attached!

WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL?
Beauty on a
3) A gorgeous body scrub that will help exfoliate the skin, keeping lackluster skin at bay.
What you'll need:
- 1 cup of brown sugar. Try and opt for as fine a sugar as possible
- 1tsp of vanilla essence (or whatever essence you decide to use. I'm a sucker for sweet smells so I tend to use Vanilla essence but feel free to use something else that works for you. Coconut and lavender essence are two examples I've tried in the past that have worked just as well. )
- 1/4 cup of almond oil
Firstly mix together the vanilla essence and sugar. Then gradually add the almond oil bit by bit, until the mixture forms a workable consistency. Then apply this to already wet skin (when you're in the shower or having a bath) in circular motions. Be sure to concentrate on areas such as elbows, heels and anywhere you are particularly prone to dry skin. Once complete, wash the skin with warm water and apply moisturizer once dry.
Try and repeat this treatment at least twice a week as it will leave you with super supple skin that could rival that of a newborn! For those of you getting off on your summer holidays soon, this product is also great just before going out in the sun as exfoliating the will prolong the length of your tan!
And there you have it! My homemade beauty treatments that won’t break the bank. Be sure to let us know how you get on with these, or even share your own homemade beauty recipes.
